He asked her a question-
And she thought she had the answer...
Shame spread through her mind
like the metastasis of a cancer.
Blinking back tears,
choking hard on her retort,
like one would on the butt of a Newport.
Heart cracked, not quite broken,
as she caught the gist
of his words unspoken.
The sky burst open,
pouring rain,
but it wasn't enough
to wash away her pain.
Shaken and unable to move;
And unable to prove
that her love for him
was as it had always been.
